The history since 1991 is loading gradually: 2 of 100 cities complete.

ERA5 has a ~30 km grid and smooths peaks: heavy-rain days here are fewer than at a rain gauge. It is for comparing months and years, not for measuring one street.

How it works

Where the numbers come from and what they don't say

We show official and model data as they arrive, with the source in each block. This site does not issue official warnings.

Where the data comes from

Warnings: INMET and Civil Defense (IDAP system), read every 15 minutes and every hour. We show the agency's level and text, unchanged.

Rain now: CEMADEN automatic rain gauges, updated every 10 minutes. The 24 h total is per gauge; each city shows its highest.

7-day forecast: Open-Meteo model for the 100 largest cities, with rain, maximum temperature and wind gust per day.

History: ERA5 reanalysis (Copernicus) via Open-Meteo, from 1991 up to yesterday, day by day.

What heavy rain means here

We use 50 mm in a day as heavy rain and 100 mm as extreme. These are simple marks to compare years, not INMET's official classification, which depends on the region.

Fifty millimetres equal 50 litres on every square metre.

How notices are chosen

Fixed rules: active emergency warnings; 50 mm or more in 24 h at a gauge; 50 mm or more forecast in a day; a high of 38 ºC or more; a gust of 70 km/h or more. Levels rise at 100 mm, 42 ºC and 90 km/h.

We show at most four, from the most serious to the mildest.

What the numbers don't say

The forecast can miss the place and time of a storm: it comes from a model, not a warning. When in doubt, the official Civil Defense warning (199) wins.

3,582 gauges sent data in the last 3 hours; 713 recorded 1 mm or more in 24 h. Abnormal readings (over 400 mm in 24 h) are discarded as a gauge fault. 50 mm in 24 h is already heavy; above 100 mm, extreme.

Rain gauges cover part of the country; where there is no gauge, rain can pass without showing up here.
