How to read the index

From good to hazardous

The IQAr is Brazil's official air quality index. Each pollutant becomes a number, and the city's index is the worst of them.

Good · 0 to 4095citiesClean air. Outdoor activities as usual.
Moderate · 41 to 804citiesSensitive people (children, older adults and those with lung or heart disease) may feel a dry cough and tiredness.
Poor · 81 to 1201citiesEveryone may feel coughing, tiredness and burning eyes, nose and throat. Sensitive people should avoid outdoor exertion.
Very poor · 121 to 2000citiesSymptoms get worse for everyone, with shortness of breath. Avoid outdoor exercise.
Hazardous · above 2000citiesSerious risk of respiratory and heart disease for everyone. Stay indoors.

Monitoring stations

Real measurements, beyond the model

Ground stations received through OpenAQ. Today they are mostly Rio de Janeiro City Hall (MonitorAr) stations and low-cost AirGradient sensors; CETESB and other state networks are not sending data to OpenAQ.

Wildfire smoke

Where fire is reaching the air

Smoke is made of fine particles (PM2.5) that go deep into the lungs. We match each city's PM2.5 with fire hotspots within 150 km, including neighboring countries.

The history since 2022 is being loaded gradually: 24 of 100 cities ready.

Worst hour of each day on Brazil's IQAr. CAMS is a model on a ~40 km grid: it shows the regional trend, not your street.

How it works

Where the numbers come from and what they don't tell you

We show official and model data as it arrives, with the source and time on each block. This site does not issue official warnings.

Where the data comes from

Pollution: the CAMS model from the EU's Copernicus program, distributed by Open-Meteo, for the 100 largest cities. We update every 3 hours, with a 5-day forecast.

UV index: Open-Meteo's daily forecast, the midday maximum with the forecast clouds.

Smoke: INPE fire hotspots (Brazil and neighbors) within 150 km of each city.

History: the same CAMS model since August 2022, when the global series starts.

Stations: real measurements received through OpenAQ, every hour.

How the index is calculated

We follow the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment guide with the limits of CONAMA Resolution 491/2018. PM2.5 and PM10 use the 24-hour average; ozone, the 8-hour average.

Each pollutant becomes a sub-index, and the city's index is the highest of them. That's why we show which pollutant drives it: PM2.5 is often smoke or traffic; ozone, strong sun with car pollution.

How notices are chosen

Notices follow fixed rules: a city with poor air or worse now, PM2.5 above 25 µg/m³ with 50 or more fire hotspots within 150 km, 2 or more forecast days with poor air and UV of 8 or more. No text is written by artificial intelligence.

The station AQI uses the same official averages (24 h for particles, 8 h for ozone) and shows up after a day of readings. Low-cost sensors are less accurate than official stations.

CAMS is a model on a grid of about 40 km. It shows the regional situation, not a single street, and can miss very local pollution, such as near a highway or a factory.

Real stations come from OpenAQ, which today covers mainly the city of Rio de Janeiro and a few low-cost sensors.

The UV index is a forecast: with more clouds than expected, it will be lower.

Short of breath? Get help.

On poor air days, drink water, avoid outdoor exertion and keep windows closed if there's smoke. If you feel short of breath or chest pain, seek medical care.
