How to read the colours

Today's level against the season's normal

Each river has its own ruler: we compare today's level with what the same station recorded at this time of year since 1990. A 17-metre river in Manaus and a 2-metre river elsewhere can be equally high.

Drought22stationsAmong the lowest 10% of years at this time of year.
Normal158stationsWithin what is seen in most years at this time of year.
High16stationsAmong the highest 10% of years at this time of year.
Alert13stationsAmong the highest 2% of years at this time of year, or above the official alert level when there is one.
Flood1stationsAbove the official flood level.

The alert here is statistical (an exceptional level for the season), not the Brazilian Geological Survey's official alert level. When we add the official levels, they will take priority.

In recent years, the typical error was 117 cm at 7 days and 171 cm at 30 days; assuming the level stays the same would miss by 123 cm at 7 days. The range covers about 80% of cases at 15 days.

This is a statistical range, computed from this station's history and the current trend. It is not an official forecast and cannot see the rain still to come.

This station has no other upstream in the catalogue, or the link with it is weak.

How it works

Where the numbers come from and what they don't say

We show what ANA measures, compared with each station's history. This site does not issue official warnings or official flood forecasts.

Where the data comes from

River level: telemetry from Brazil's National Water Agency (ANA), which receives readings every 15 minutes from its stations. The portal follows about 55 stations on the main rivers and refreshes each one every hour.

History: ANA's daily level series since 1990. It gives the monthly level and what is normal for each time of year.

Map: river lines are from Natural Earth. Each stretch takes the colour of the nearest station on the same river; stretches with no station nearby stay uncoloured, and some rivers do not appear on the map, only their stations.

What the colours mean

We compare today's level with what the station itself recorded at this time of year since 1990: drought is a level among the lowest 10%, high among the highest 10%, alert among the highest 2%, and normal is the rest.

The official alert and flood levels from the Brazilian Geological Survey are not in the portal yet. So the alert here is statistical: an exceptional level for the season, which is not the same as the overflow level.

How we estimate the coming days

For each station, we look at how much the level changed in 7, 15 and 30 days in the same seasons of every year since 1990, separating cases where the river was rising, steady or falling. The most common change, added to today's level, is the most likely value; the 10% and 90% give the range.

We tested the method on the last 10 years, without looking at the tested year: the typical error and how much of reality falls inside the range appear for each station. On the big Amazon rivers the method misses far less than assuming the level stays the same, and on smaller rivers the gap is smaller.

It is a statistical estimate. It does not see the rain still to come, nor anything outside the history, and does not replace the official forecast from the Brazilian Geological Survey and Civil Defense.

Water coming from upstream

On each river, we link each station to the one above it. We measure in the history with how many days of delay the 5-day change at one shows up at the other and how much of the change passes (correlation and coefficient). We only use it when the correlation is 0.6 or more and the upstream change is not small.

On big, slow rivers, like the Solimões, water from upstream takes days to arrive. On others, the delay is under a day and the link is only context.

How notices are chosen

Fixed rules: a station at alert or above the flood level; a 7-day change beyond one and a half times the station's typical change; a rising river whose range reaches the high-water mark within 15 days; a river in low water and still falling; upstream water on its way. We show at most four. No text is written by artificial intelligence.

What the numbers don't say

Each station's ruler is its own zero, not sea level, and official levels use the same ruler. Stations near the sea feel the tide. Stations can fail for days, and ANA corrects readings later.

The history is about 35 years. Climate change and changes to riverbank use make the past represent the future only in part.

Rivers regulated by dams, like the Xingu at Altamira or the São Francisco at Pirapora, can sit outside normal because of how the plants are operated rather than because of rain. At stations whose level shifted to a new range (a dam, works or a gauge), the reference uses only the years since the change.

River rising near you?

Follow Civil Defense warnings, avoid riverbanks and flooded areas, and do not cross running water. If at risk, call Civil Defense or the Fire Department.
